Thanks again for a great and helpful article.While evalutating the Volume Normalization of the Mac version of dbPa I found some inconsistencies. Is there a way to “run” these files through VLC with these levels preset to a comfortable level (realizing of course that perfection would be out of the question.ĭoes VLC have the capability to record files like there from the net while normalizing them and converting to MP3 at the same time?

Instead of doing a little research before hand, I chose the easy way out used the free Youtube Downloader program available on the net. I should note here that these files were now downloaded or converted via VLC. While a lot of them are OK volume wise, others vary considerably from too low or way too high. My problem deals with multiple audio files on a CD/DVD which I downloaded from Youtube and converted to MP3. I thought I had found the solution to my problem, but alas, as I read through the article I was disheartened when I reached the point where it states you must go through this process for each item you are listening to. Play the movie and adjust these to get a more even audio playback.

Adjust Attack to between 50ms and 75ms and Release to between 100ms and 250ms.

Then adjust the Ratio to the maximum to ensure all audio doesn’t exceed the current levels.

Adjust the Threshold slider down until it is at a much more sensible level.

Find a louder section where audio peaks too high.

Just worry about matching your own personal preferences as closely as you can.

You have to make the change by ear but it doesn’t have to be exact. Open up the settings as above and raise Makeup gain until the audio is around the level of the rest of the audio. To truly make a difference in TV or movie audio playback, you need to use the audio compressor. Setting them from here will give you a more fluid transition in and out of the scene, so you won’t be getting slapped upside the head by sudden, jarring volume changes. This should go a long way to setting the audio volume at a reasonable level without peaks and troughs.
